Home Gardening Log

September 2020

Looking pretty good overall. The garlic didn’t do great, but fruit and leafy vegetables are finally coming in. Interestingly, this pumpkin sprouted from compost—seeds that survived the kitchen waste pile! It’s a bit oval and the taste wasn’t great, more like a gourd. When you reuse seeds from homegrown vegetables, sometimes they revert to ancestral traits. Some may even develop toxic compounds, so caution is advised.

The tomatoes are beautifully vibrant.

Basil became pesto. I’ll share the recipe someday.

The taro looks vigorous above ground, though what’s happening underground is still a mystery. Taro prefers clay-rich soil, so this field might actually be a good fit.
